Older remember, perhaps, lovers of music hall still love it ...: Damia was the great queen of Parisian nightlife of the interwar it haunted him since the early 10 The music hall is so extraordinary that crucible in which writers meet (Colette, Giono, Morand painters ... (Fujita, Berard, Colin Lempicka), politicians (Blum, La Roque , Cot beer ...), and of course artists (Gabin, Fernandel, Mistinguett ....) The existence of Damia is romantic and bold, sulfur in relation to conventions of the time mistress of men and women (among his many loves, there are the dancer Loie Fuller Chaliapin and Minister Pierre Cot. She is also friends with movie stars (Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Jean Marais ...), filmmakers (René Clair, Abel Gance Duvivier, with whom she shot film) and intellectuals: Federico Garcia Lorca, Max Jacob, Simenon. Jean Genet draws even gestures to create the Divine in "Our Lady of the Flowers". Damia born in the Vosges in Paris has grown into a popular medium that leaks early on, even minor which earned him several trips to home remedies. The street attracts. This beautiful girl who said earlier sometimes reddish brown, is seen dancing: she is a singer. Is this difficult childhood where she was not yet so unloved, it retains a melancholy that only drugs or alcohol make him forget ... ? Avant-garde in the way of occupying the stage, Damia embodies the values informed observers of German Expressionism in vogue in the 20s. Thus it is both very popular (very "populist") but it also brings together the rich aristocrats, intellectuals and others involved. She will sing for the Popular Front, against the Treaty of Munich and not meddle with the Nazi occupiers. After the war, while Piaf became so famous, Damia to whom she owes much gradually falls into oblivion. Even a special tour of Japan does not rekindle the flame of his audience.

the Peters Sisters, 1000 pounds of harmony and rhythm

Ah, Peters Sisters, older users will remember this trio of singers blacks plump and smiling, which sowed the gaiety and good humor during their live performances and film. Learning from a friend the record of the last survivor of the group, the talented Vee Virginia, in the anonymity of more complete, I had the urge to raise these petulant artist synonymous with rhythm and optimism.

Born in California to a father bookstore, Anne, Virginia and Matty singing in church when they younger age while engaged in acrobatic dance numbers and contortionism college before starting at local clubs in Los Angeles. They were quickly noticed by Eddie Cantor, the renowned Broadway fantasy, became a movie star, no doubt also interested in their harmonious and melodious voice that covered by their silhouettes (365 kgs in three of them!) Which gives them an air of nice comforters. He hires them in his film "Ali Baba Goes to Town", a very funny musical comedy where the actor with round eyes like balls of lotto dream he finds himself in Persia at the time of the thousand Nights. Curiously dressed up tribal outfits (including Virginia who wears a feather in the tip of her bra), the three sisters sing and dance with an Eddie Cantor, his face darkened by makeup and black tap dancer Jeni Legon (which continues his career on Broadway over 93 years). A number frankly sympathetic.
We see also in love and kisses, a Music Series B featuring Tobi Wing blonde girl prefers to Busby Berkeley and the Model of the college with the skater Sonja Henie dimpled and Tyrone Power. It is still limited to a secondary appearances song. It was just tolerable dose for many racist statements from the U.S., where some distributors cut downright delivery of black artists. An attitude as shocking and unjust, because often the numbers of black singers and dancers outperformed those headliners.
In 1938, the three sisters are with the great Duke Ellington and his orchestra.
at the Cotton Club in New York, a famous dance hall in Harlem, where the best black artists occurred before a white audience. In 1939, during their visit to London in a magazine, they appear in the movie French Without Tears, a comedy and spiritual well removed Anthony Asquith with Ray Milland, During the war, they are found on Broadway in the musical artists and models. In 1947, the sisters find the indefatigable Cab Calloway in a very low budget film composed solely of artists and blacks for the black population, whose distribution had to be very confidential at the time, and which now the delight of jazz fans to DVD. Given the lack of resources and talent behind the camera, do not look much curiosity in this an opportunity to assess Cab and the Peters sisters.
The three women then begin European tour which will be triumphant. France and Germany are attracted by the liveliness of the three mamas. Committed to the Folies Bergere with Henri Salvador, they unleashed the applause dressed as Musketeers! French and sing sweet, sweet, sweet mellifluous voice their
A pretty slow once again by Eliane Embrun. In 1949, the Peters sisters are feeling in us go to Paris, a musical of John Boyer, who narrates the adventures of a pirate radio station. Innocuous today, the film won a victory at the time and marked a generation, because of the high dose of optimism it exhaled, and the jazzy rhythms. With particular reference to our sisters landed by parachute with Henri Salvador. It is said that this big prankster had quarreled with Matty by suggesting to an arm of honor to the public during a show. Ignoring the significance of this gesture, the singer had performed in front of a room offended! In any event, the warm welcome of the French and the joy of living in a country where segregation was absent would now determine the fate of Peters in Europe. Matty a Danish wife, Anne composer Emil Stern (author of Songs and Renée Lebas Serge Lama) and Virginia designer Michael Engel, who became the impresario of the 3 graces. The latter has two children with prestigious sponsors: Jean Richard, Br uno Merrick and Lena Horne!
jazz purists deplore the notable decline in the quality of the directory of Peters who renounce to exploit the full extent of their vocal range for the variety sometimes easy, as rumbadi-cha-cha-cha they register in the language of Goethe and Molière.
The three sisters remain in the 50s attraction of choice, as they appear in the radio of John Nohain, sponsor of the tour in France and in Many French and German musicals of the era like no holiday for the mayor, a turnip with the effete crooner Andre Claveau or legs of Dolores, musical revue in color with Germaine Damar which is exported with an unexpected success until South America. We remain perplexed
Three love letters Tyrol (1962) or the mountain sings (1957) German Film Folk subjects worn where the sisters warble between two zip lines. In a masked ball at Scotland Yard (63), German musical that parodies the detective films so popular there, the sisters return to the famous nicely "the Best Things In Life Are Free. " The sudden death of Matty, the most buxom of the trio, in the same year, will put an end to the group. The younger Virginia Vee continue his career in France for over 20 years. Friend of the greatest jazz musicians of his time at Nat King Cole Louis Armstrong, she recorded a lot of 45s, in both French and English (with a strong accent) where the air film Modesty Blase without much success, terms of sales. Virginia is beauce oup appeared in variety shows of the 60s and 70s, in particular Guy Lux. It was also seen singing in three rooms in Manhattan, the film Carne (dreaming Martial Solal Of You). She has participated in opera Aran's ambitious project of Gilbert Becaud and got a critical success with a cover of the Bee Gees in 1969 "I can not see nobody."
In 1982, she still has the generic cartoon of Albert Barillé Enchanted Space: The Revenge of the Humanoids (with music by Michel Legrand).
Always smiling and so round, Virginia has also sung in churches and gospel mix soliloquies about his memories of art.
She passed away recently, unless the new is reflected by the media. There is little things! Here, we do not forget as well as his two talented sisters.
